Rapid temporal decline of mercury in Greenland halibut (Reinhardtius hippoglossoides)

چکیده

Mercury (Hg) pollution in the ocean is an issue of global concern, however bioaccumulation regimes this ubiquitous pollutant marine apex predators have important knowledge gaps. Our fish length and stable isotope (δ15N δ13C) normalized data Greenland halibut (GH) (Reinhardtius hippoglossoides) showed that Hg fillet tissue decreased by ~35–50 %, over a ten-year period from 2006 to 2015 (n = 7 individual sampling years). was predominantly methylmercury form (>77 %). Results Bayesian information theoretic model GH concentrations with time its associated declines air emissions, estimated trophic position, potentially lower degree demersal prey use as indicated temporal trend shifts nitrogen (δ15N) carbon (δ13C) values. accounted for about one third observed reduction Hg. study demonstrates importance simultaneously considering food web dynamics drivers marine, deep water species highlights effectiveness regulations on predator overall seafood safety.

When to count your eggs: Is fecundity in Greenland halibut (Reinhardtius hippoglossoides W.) down-regulated?

Fecundity in several fish species is subject to down-regulation by atresia so if fecundity is estimated many months before spawning, this will be an overestimation of the realised fecundity (actual number of eggs spawned). In order to get accurate measurements of fecundity it is important to have knowledge on when potential fecundity (estimated fecundity at time of sampling) closely resembles t...

Deep-ocean predation by a high Arctic cetacean

A bioenergetic model for two narwhal (Monodon monoceros) sub-populations was developed to quantify daily gross energy requirements and estimate the biomass of Greenland halibut (Reinhardtius hippoglossoides) needed to sustain the sub-populations for their 5-month stay on wintering grounds in Baffin Bay. Whales in two separate wintering grounds were estimated to require 700 tonnes (s.e. 300) and...

Historical and Current Knowledge of the Greenland Halibut from Québec Fixed-gear Fishers in the Gulf of St. Lawrence

Fishing for Greenland halibut (Reinhardtius hippoglossoides) in the estuary and the Gulf of St. Lawrence (NAFO divisions 4RST) has been practiced mainly with gillnets by coastal fishers of Quebec and Newfoundland since the beginning of the 1970s. However, little information is available on the development of this exploitation, for example, on the evolution of the fishing practices. In 1997, a p...

Winter Feeding Intensity of Narwhals (monodon Monoceros)

Stomach contents from 121 narwhals (Monondon monoceros) harvested in the eastern Canadian High Arctic and West Greenland were used to quantify seasonal changes in feeding activity and prey selection. Stomachs collected from summer harvests were mostly empty with little evidence of recent feeding. Stomachs collected in late fall and winter harvests had considerable amounts of undigested material...

Environmental factors affecting recruitment of northern shrimp Pandalus borealis in West Greenland waters

Survey estimates of northern shrimp Pandalus borealis biomass in West Greenland waters increased from about 178 000 t in 1998 to about 598 000 t in 2003. The increase in stock size was preceded by several consecutive years in which recruitment was substantially above average. Recruitment has been poor since then despite record high levels of female stock biomass. Rickertype stock-recruitment fu...
